Overview

For patients who wish to have a firmer, fuller, and rounder buttocks, butt augmentation surgery has many options to surgically enhance and improve the posterior. Whether the patient's butt shape is natural or has developed due to significant weight loss, age, or gravity, buttock augmentation can create the patient's desired shape through silicone implants or a fat transfer from another part of the patient's body. A fat transfer to the buttocks (popularly known as a Brazilian butt lift) typically provides more natural results and includes the bonus of removing fat from an unwanted area (such as the stomach, hips, or thighs). For other patients, silicone butt implants may be a better option, with the size, shape, and material carefully chosen by cosmetic surgeons Dr. Erik Nuveen or Dr. Courtney Caplin for their patient's unique needs and cosmetic goals. During the initial consultation at Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates in Oklahoma City, patients can learn about their butt augmentation options and determine their personal treatment plan.

Surgical Technique

During the initial consultation, the body will be evaluated to determine if the patient is a better candidate for a fat transfer or implants. For those who are thin with low fat volume, an implant will be advised. During this process, the buttock is fitted with a soft silicone implant on top of the bone area, and under the muscle. We will discuss the type of implants during the consultation before any decision is made. The decision for the shape and size of the gluteal implants is made based on the individual desires and the general body type of the patient. For those who are wondering how implants will look and feel, the technology advancement of today produces implants that are natural and safe for long-term use.

During/After Surgery

Recovery from a butt augmentation procedure where implants were used generally has a 2-3 week recovery period. Swelling and bruising is commong but this will only last for a few days. During this period, the patient must avoid putting weight on the buttocks. When sitting or lying down, the weight must be on the thighs or abdomen until the buttocks are fully recovered. The scarring will be mostly concealed as the incision is usually positioned in between the buttock cheeks. The patient will be able to go back to a normal routine after 1-2 weeks, and exercises may be resumed after 6 weeks.

Expected Cost

On average, butt augmentation surgery using a silicone implant will cost around $8,250-$10,000 depending on the techniques used. The price may be higher if a fat transfer was performed due to the fact that liposuction is involved.

How long before I see results?

This varies with the type of procedure performed. It also depends on the individual. Some people bruise easily, while others don't. Generally there will be swelling and some bruising after surgery. Both will usually disappear over a week or two. The final optimal result can usually be appreciated a few months after surgery. At first, you may feel uncomfortable after buttock implant surgery, and will be advised to not sit until the sutures have time to heal. In most cases, you’ll have to rest on your stomach side to let the region heal. After a week (approximately), you’ll be able to sit comfortably again, but it may seem to you at first as though you’re sitting on a wallet, or padding. This is the feeling one gets in the upper region of the buttock, although this isn't the load-bearing region when one sits.

Butt Augmentation FAQs

How Natural?

The quality of the implants used and the expertise of the surgeon are very important factors when it comes to the aesthetic satisfaction after the procedure. The implants should look and feel natural especially after the swelling subsides. When done correctly, your buttocks will look as natural as someone who spent weeks at the gym.

Natural or Synthetic?

This will depend on the patient’s body and personal goals. Natural method of fat transfers is advised if the patient has enough fat deposits that can be grafted and reinstated in a deflated butt. However, if the patient is thin, an implant is recommended as there may not be enough fat to transfer. It is also important to note that fat transfers do not last forever, and eventually the body will reabsorb some of the fat. An implant offers a permanent solution. The pros and cons of both techniques must be discussed in detail so that the best decision can be made to meet the patient’s overall goals.

What About Sitting?

In the first couple of weeks after surgery, the patient must not put any weight on the buttocks and should place the weight on the thighs instead. Once the pain and swelling subside, the patient will be able to sit and go back to their normal routine. A soft pillow in the first several months will help ease some pressure. The implants are placed on the upper part of the buttocks and so patients must not be anxious if they are sitting on the implants. Over time, the implants will take on a natural look and feel.

Weight Gain?

Any significant weight gain after a cosmetic buttocks surgery may compromise the surgical results. This is a concern especially after a butt augmentation because fats are deposited in the buttocks area first, which will affect the shape and contour the surgery already achieved. It is best to maintain a healthy lifestyle with good diet and regular exercise to ensure the long-term effect of this procedure.

What are the risks?

As with any operation there are certain risks. The most common risks include bleeding, infection and scarring. Although these events are usually infrequent (less than 1%) they sometimes can occur. Drains are used in this surgery in almost every case. These will be discussed with you during the consultation for your procedure.

How long is the surgery?

It generally depends on the type and extent of the procedure. Whether you're having buttock implants with or without liposuction, each procedure usually takes between one to two hours.

What size implants to get?

The shape and size depends on your buttock anatomy, whether or not your buttock is a short buttock or a longer buttock or a wider buttock or a narrow buttock. We will go over the sizes and what size is best for your body during your consultation.

May I stay home by myself?

Following the procedure the patient must go home with a responsible adult. That adult must be present and in observation of the patient for 24 hours.

What are the implants made of?

Butt implants are pieces of solid silicone that can provide more prominence to a flat bottom. The implants are inserted under the gluteus maximus muscle. The implants come in several shapes and sizes. Gluteal implants cannot leak or rupture because they are solid silicone.

When will the results show?

Pretty much immediately. There will be swelling after buttock augmentation procedures, but the results will be immediate, and the full results can be seen after the swelling resolves.

How long to recover?

Recovery periods for both butt implants and a buttock lift are perhaps the longest of any cosmetic procedure. For both, not only will you be doing most of your recovery flat on your stomach, you may need someone to stay with you and help you around the house for a few days after your procedure.

Recovery is shortest for a Brazilian butt lift (fat injections), where you can sit for short periods the day after your procedure. But for both butt implants and a buttock lift, expect to stay on your stomach most of the time for at least a week and up to 4 weeks. Most people can return to work a week after fat injections, but it will be at least 2 weeks after either butt implants or a buttock lift. Your surgeon will give you specific advice for when you can resume your usual activities.

Difference between implants?

Breast implants have a soft silicone or liquid saline so they can get compressed by your tissues. Buttock implants are a solid silicone that are soft to touch but don’t conform to their surroundings as much. You pick the specific size and shape in order to get the booty you want.
