Overview

To remove excess, stubborn fat, liposuction surgically extracts fat tissue through small incisions. While most patients are typically satisfied with their results, some patients come to Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates in Oklahoma City for help after poor liposuction outcomes with another surgeon. An inexperienced surgeon may leave the patient with skin irregularities including bumpy fat pockets, uneven bulges, indentations, and poor contours. Cosmetic surgeons Dr. Erik Nuveen and Dr. Courtney Caplin can perform revision liposuction for patients who are unsatisfied with the results created by another surgeon to improve the patient's appearance. Also known as secondary liposuction, revision lipo may include additional liposuction, fat transfer, and other techniques based on the patient's needs and concerns to get the patient their desired results.

Surgical Technique

Damage done by an initial liposuction procedure may be superficial or take place within deep layers. Specific techniques are designed to repair and restore the problem areas depending on how deep the damage is. Treatment for superficial damage is focused on the tissues close to the skin. Liposuction is reintroduced to flatten out the areas of fat that a previous liposuction failed to remove. For deep layer damage, treatment focuses on the deeper fat tissues. Liposuction is still the major technique to be used to remove excess fat. If there are visible hollow skin pockets, fat grafting may be performed.

During/After Surgery

Revision liposuction is performed in an accredited surgical facility typically about 3 to 6 months after the initial liposuction. General anesthesia is used. The surgical procedure is similar to what was experienced in the previous treatment, and the same is true for the recovery period. The only difference is the cosmetic approach of the surgeon as this procedure calls for a highly specialized skill set. Although the restoration will not result to 100% similarity of pre-liposuction body, results are gratifying and relieving.

Expected Cost

The cost for revision liposuction may be lower or even higher than what the patient initially paid depending on how much damage needs repair. It can be tricky as patients who are dissatisfied with the first liposuction feel that the secondary session must be on the surgeon’s cost. However, surgeons may still charge fees with touch-ups. Most unhappy patients will have their secondary liposuction with a different surgeon and this may cost a higher fee based on expertise.

Revision Liposuction FAQs

Different Surgeon?

It depends how much adjustment is needed. If there are small irregularities, the same surgeon will be able to correct this. If the liposuction damaged a large area of the body, it is more often a case of a surgeon who did not have the proper experience and skills. As such, it is highly recommended to find a skilled revision liposuction surgeon. It is important to understand that there is no guarantee that a secondary surgery will fully restore a natural appearance. However, it  can definitely make significant improvements.

When Can I Do It?

Patients who are dissatisfied with the results of an initial liposuction surgery may feel the need for an urgent fix. It is recommended though that a period of at least 3 to 6 months pass before undergoing a revision liposuction. For any surgery, there is a recovery period in which the body needs to properly heal. Performing a premature secondary liposuction may only result in further complications. It is always best to wait until the doctor agrees that the patient is ready for another session of surgery.

Does This Usually Happen?

Liposuction has a very good success rate, especially when performed in the hands of an experienced surgeon. In the hands of an inexperienced surgeon, poor results may ensue. It is recommended with any cosmetic procedure to find a plastic surgeon that is highly skilled to perform the procedure the patient is seeking to have.
