What is cheek augmentation?

Whether it is natural or caused by age, flattened cheekbones without youthful contours can make the face look hollow and tired. Cheek augmentation can use nonsurgical injectable fillers to temporarily enhance the volume of the cheeks. Cheek augmentation can also be used to correct deformities and asymmetry from congenital conditions or injuries. At Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates in Oklahoma City, OK our providers, Jamie Stokes, APRN and cosmetic surgeons Dr. Erik Nuveen, Dr. Taylor Jung and Dr. Courtney Caplin can start by performing volume injections with dermal fillers to help determine the amount and placement of volume for a more youthful, natural look. In addition to making the face appear more youthful, cheek augmentation often decreases the appearance of lines and wrinkles for a smoother face.

What Type of Cheek augmentation is right for me?

Midface volume can be addresses surgically or non-surgically. Cheek implants are either placed within the malar (directly on the cheekbone) or submalar (below the cheekbone) area. These are inserted through incisions made typically within the upper lip or below the eyes. Implants can vary in type, size, and shape depending on the analysis of the cheek structure. Listed below are the common methods used for cheek augmentation techniques.

  • Silicone Implants

Silicone is a permanent solution to add volume to the cheeks with a variety of shapes and sizes that match the patient’s preference. The surgeon will consider the silicone shape and size, as well as the definition of the implant, which will be provided after a digital analysis of the patient’s facial structure has been assessed. Pockets will be made directly against the cheekbone where the implants will be fitted and sutured. This type of silicone is unlike the silicone gel found in breast implants, and it is a safer option as it is in solid form and does not run any risks of leakage.

  • Porous Polythylene

Another popular implant option is porous polyethylene, which is also inserted the same way as a silicone implant. Because the material is porous, it shapes naturally according to the cheek’s internal contours. This type of implant also attaches better to the bones and tissues and allows tissue to grow through it, further adjusting it to the cheek’s natural form. A disadvantage with this implant is because of this tissue integration, it is quite difficult to remove the implant, should the patient want it taken out.

  • Fillers

Filler creates a beautiful, natural looking result non-surgically. The least invasive of all procedures, the filler is injected in deep layers within the mid-face area. This can be perform during an office appointment. There are many types of fillers for the midface with longevity ranging from 1-5 years.

  • Fat Grafting

Another natural substance that can be injected into the mid-face to enhance volume is the patient’s own fat tissues that is harvested from donor sites using liposuction and then injected into the cheeks. Fat can also be absorbed by the body over time, so similar to an injectable filler, this option does not create a permanent result.

What can I expect During/After Surgery?

Cheek augmentation is done as an outpatient procedure with the use of anesthesia. It is performed in an accredited surgical facility and normally takes up to one hour to complete. Bruising, swelling, and numbness are a part of the immediate recovery and usually subside within the second week. Although the result is instantly noticeable, over the course of a few months as the implant settles into its new position, the results will become softer and more natural.

How much does cheek augmentation cost?

The average cost of cheek augmentation varies depending if your plan includes surgical or nonsurgical recommendations. This primarily depends on the type of implants or fillers used.

Cheek augmentation FAQs

Should I receive implants or fillers for cheek augmentation?
Generally, both have long-standing records when it comes to safety. The major concern that many patients have is the permanence of the results. Injectable fillers are mostly temporary. As these are manufactured from natural substances, a great volume of the filler is absorbed by the body. Silicone implants are made solid in this type of augmentation and have no risk of leakage, which renders them more permanent than the other materials.

Will my results from cheek augmentation look natural?
Initially, the face will feel stretched and tight as the implants settle into its position. This is normal and the sensation will gradually disappear until a month passes. It is important to find a plastic surgeon that has a good track record in performing facial procedures to ensure that the results will be according to the patient’s aesthetic goals.

Will a cheek augmentation leave noticeable scarring?
Since the incisions are made within the mouth and underneath the upper lip, the scars will not be visible. The scars will dissolve on their own.

What type of dermal fillers do you use for injections?
For many years, Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates has had reliable, consistent results from the Juvéderm product line of dermal fillers, particularly Voluma, for the cheeks. As a formulation of hyaluronic acid, Voluma can enhance the cheeks by filling in sunken, hollow areas beneath the surface of your skin. This is a temporary solution for volume loss or for the appearance of having higher cheekbones. Rest assured, when you are at Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates, we will be performing the injections for you for excellent, reliable results that will have your cheeks looking younger, fuller, and refined.

What if I have an asymmetrical face?
If you are concerned that your facial asymmetry is unattractive or that you do not have a balance to your overall facial appearance because of the volume or height of your cheekbones, you can schedule a consultation to have us assess your options. If you are considering cheek implants, fat grafting, or fillers to make your cheekbones the same height and higher, please call today to schedule your appointment.

Can I have a fat grafting performed to fill in my cheeks?
Yes. In fact, Dr. Nuveen uses advanced fat grafting techniques for the restoration of volume in the soft tissues of the face and around the orbits. Using your own fat can create a more youthful shape to your face and may even feel more natural to the touch than a synthetic implant or a temporary dermal filler. To determine if a fat grafting procedure is right for you, we recommend setting up an appointment with Dr. Nuveen for an exam and consultation at our office in Oklahoma City, OK.
