Since the eyes are one of the most noticeable features, it’s often necessary to turn to surgery to refresh and restore them once they look aged and dull. At Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates in Oklahoma City, the cosmetic surgeons can perform eyelid surgery (also called blepharoplasty) to remove excessive fat and fullness around the upper and/or lower eyelids. In addition, Dr. Erik Nuveen and Dr. Courtney Caplin can lift sagging skin around the eye region so that eyes appear more alert, refreshed and overall younger-looking. Eyelid surgery can also address bags and wrinkles around the eyes for an overall improved look.
Eyelid Surgery Reviews
"After years of wanting a blepharoplasty, I finally decided to take the plunge and went with Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates. After my initial consultation with Jessica, all of my worries and fears were put to rest. She was extremely knowledgeable and kind. I then had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Jensen, who performed my procedure. I was amazed at how professional and compassionate he was. I've never met a doctor quite like him! He never once made me felt like just a patient, but more like a friend instead. Dr. Jensen went above and beyond to address all of my concerns and make me feel completely comfortable. Along with being one of the kindest people I've ever met, he does amazing work! I couldn't imagine being happier with my results from the procedure. I truly received the best quality patient care and would highly recommend him and his staff."- A.C. / Google / Mar 07, 2015
"What can I say about Dr. Nuveen, Dr. Jensen, Mandy, Jessica, Jennifer, Ashley, Taylor, Hannah and the rest of the staff at CSAOK? One word comes to mind....FABULOUS! I contemplated having breast augmentation for many, many years but did not have the confidence to face anyone with the issues I had with my breasts. After hearing great reviews from a family member I decided to give it a whirl. It wasn't easy but I went online and completed the consultation information and within hours I received an email requesting pictures. Oh my, the tough part. How do I send pictures when it felt so humiliating? I finally gave in and sent pictures and cried for 3 hours. Shortly after my crying was done I received a phone call from the fabulous Mandy Newman. She quickly put me at ease and I was sold. I was given thorough information about what needed to be done, a lift followed by augmentation 3 months later. I scheduled my first surgery and was nervous which is absolutely normal. When I walked in, the atmosphere at CSAOK was soothing. Shortly after came the unveiling to Dr. Nuveen. He put me at ease from his handshake not to mention he is easy on the eyes, (under anesthesia I have been known to say he is smokin' hot!) I had my lift and he personally called that evening to check on me. I was home and back at work within 2 days and had more confidence than I ever had in my life even though my breasts were quite small for my taste! I had no complications, no problems to speak of. Life got in the way and I did not have my augmentation until 9 months later. I was not nervous, I was excited because I knew I was in the best hands possible. I met Dr. Jensen during my second surgery and he was so very nice. The ladies in the office from the receptionist to the nurses treated me like a friend rather than a patient. My augmentation was a success! I opted for saline implants and I am so happy with the results. I have normal breasts for once in my life! I cannot tell you enough how my confidence is at an all time high. I can wear V-neck shirts, I can wear a bathing suit and not feel awkward. Dr. Nuveen had quite a canvas to work with and I can just say that Michaelangelo has nothing on doc! I was so pleased I referred my own daughter who had surgery about 4 months after me. Dr. Jensen was there to greet us and followed up the evening after her surgery and she had no complications, no problems whatsoever. We both returned for Botox a month later and Jessica did a great job. If you are looking to have any cosmetic surgery procedures, you MUST go see Dr. Nuveen and Dr. Jensen. If you choose to go elsewhere, don't say I didn't warn you! Call them today and you won't be sorry. Other than marrying my husband and having four wonderful children, it is the best decision I have ever made. So.......what are you waiting for? DO IT NOW!!"- M.D. / Google / Feb 08, 2015
"5 Years into It and Lovin It Still - Midland, TX - Even though I am from Texas I made an appt with a surgeon from Oklahoma CIty. I did my research and asked all the right questions. I have 3 children, nursed them all and figured that at 35 years old it was time to finally have some boobs. I am 5'10" and weight around 125 to 130 slim build. I wore prior to enhancement a 34A cup. After surgery I now wear a 34D to DD. You might think that I went way overboard, but given the fact that I am very tall and very slim, most people think that I am a full C cup. They do not look big or fake at all for that matter. They were put between the pectoral muscles in what they call a muscle sandwich. Before I had no breast tissue. You are not able to see the implants at all. I do however, have amazing control over them due to the fact that they are under my pectoral. I am now 40 years old and still no signs of rippling, contracture, anything. I had 400cc's put in one breast and 410cc's in the other. They used Mentor high profile smooth saline implants. They are as beautiful as the day the Doc put them in. I now am able to wear anything I want. No longer do I have do be on the safe side. I can go as low as I want to. I highly recommend DR. Eric Nuveen. He is absolutley AWESOME + he's really easy on the eyes. His staff is fabulous and very caring. They all took really goos care of me for the short time I was in their care. I am actually thinking that in 5 more years I may go in and have the new memory gel put in and maybe even go a tad bigger. "- S. / RealSelf / Oct 12, 2011
"I had been looking for a physician to place filler underneath my eyes. This procedure takes a very skilled physician. After getting 4 different consults, I went to see Dr. Caplin. Not only did she place the filler for me perfectly, she was up front and honest about the possible risks, and she listened to every one of my concerns. I would recommend her to anyone!"- J.E. / Google / Aug 28, 2017
"The staff is very welcoming here and responsive. My consult with Dr. Nuveen was comforting, kind, extensive and generous to a fault. I left there feeling like he truly cared about me. I chose him over 7 other plastic surgeouns who've been in the community 15-25 years. I also based it on his beautil appearance. He's either been blessed naturally or if any plastic surgery it looks so natural. I cant wait to have mine this month. Thank you for giving me a second chance. Sincerely, Karla Strickland."- K.S. / Google / Nov 06, 2017
Blepharoplasty Surgical Technique
The procedure may either be performed on the upper eyelid only or the lower lid, or both. There will be a difference in approaches when it comes to the upper and lower eyelids but the method is similar; removing any loose skin or tissue, and extracting or repositioning the fat deposit. There will also be separate incisions spots. It is important to understand that this will not help with other cosmetic issues such as crow’s feet, wrinkles or dark circles. The results of an eyelid surgery are fairly isolated within the upper and lower lid section only. There are other procedures that can be combined, for example the use of BOTOX®, to create a maximized outcome.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
The most common problem with the upper eyelid is excess skin that droops and hangs over the eyes. Not only does this look unappealing, but it can also obstruct vision for a patient. The doctor will create an incision along the natural fold of the eyelid and extract any excess fat and tissue to remove any bulges. Once done, excess skin will also be trimmed and the cut will be closed with fine sutures. There are cases when fat tissues are only repositioned instead of excised.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
There are two options for incisions when it comes to lower eyelid surgery. This treatment will improve any appearance of bulging and sagging below the eye. Incisions may be made just slightly below the lash line and excess fat, tissue or skin will be excised. If the skin has retained good elasticity, a transconjunctival incision may be a better option as the cut is made inside the lower eyelid, which effectively makes any resulting scar concealed. A lower lid lift does not necessarily improve the dark circles that may occur under the eyes. The surgeon may recommend combining a lower blepharoplasty with another procedure such as a chemical peel or an injectable filler.
During/After Blepharoplasty Surgery
Eyelid surgery is performed with general anesthesia. If the procedure involves both upper and lower eyelids, the plastic surgeon will typically manage the upper eyelid first. On average, it takes 1-2 hours to complete the operation. The patient will be sent home for recovery. For the first few days, there will be swelling and discoloration around the area. It is advised that the head is elevated for the first few days. Pain medications and antibiotics will be prescribed to manage the initial discomfort. Strenuous activities must also be restricted.
Blepharoplasty Expected Cost
The average fee for this surgery is $7,010 if both the lower and upper eyelids are addressed. For patients who desire to only treat the upper or lower eyelids, the price is $3,555 In most cases, insurance will not cover cosmetic eyelid surgery.
**Fee's that are posted are subject to change. No doctor/patient relationship is established until exam. Consent in perpetuity until canceled in writing.

What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that improves the upper and lower eyelids. The upper blepharoplasty is aimed at correcting the sagging skin that overhangs the upper lid. The surgery for the upper eyelids removes mostly skin and a small amount of fat from the inner corner of the eye. The result is a more open-eyed appearance and a absolute improvement in light entering the eye! Patients often report seeing traffic lights with ease and generally perceiving a broader visual field.
The lower blepharoplasty is aimed at correcting the” bags” and wrinkles that form underneath the eye. The surgery can be done from an incision underneath the eyelashes (subciliary approach) or through the clear tissue inside the lower eyelid (transconjunctival). Dr. Nuveen will inform you which the best approach is for you. The fat is then gently removed and a small amount of skin is the removed or tightened with the use of chemical peels or laser skin resurfacing. The result is a natural and refreshed look.
Eyelid surgery, whether upper or lower, generally does not cause visible scarring. This is because the surgeon takes great care to ensure that the incisions are made within the natural lines and folds of the eyes. Once the surgical healing has passed, the incisions will not be noticeable even to the naked eye.
Wrinkles and Crow's Feet?
Crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles are better treated with procedures such as a facelift, browlift or a cheek lift as the results of the eyelid surgery are confined to the eyelids only. Eyelid surgery can also be combined with a nonsurgical procedure such as BOTOX, which combats wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. An injectable filler can also be effective because it adds volume to hollow areas for a softer, smoother appearance.
Complications and irritations after surgery are rare. Patients must strictly adhere to care instructions prescribed by the surgeon to minimize any risks of infection as the eyes can be sensitive after surgery. Patients must always take precaution of protecting the eyes from the sun and wind during the first few weeks of recovery.
Blepharoplasty not only corrects a cosmetic issue, but a functional one as well. Many patients with excess hanging skin on their upper eyelid are able to regain normal vision after surgery. For many, simply applying makeup without maneuvering around the excess skin is refreshing in and of itself.
Are there any limitations?
Blepharoplasty refers to eyelid surgery. Many times, patient may have brows that have descended and are low. These patients may need a brow lift procedure to elevate the brows. Patients that may have puffy lower eyelids due to allergies will not achieve improvement with the blepharoplasty procedure.
Where are the incisions made?
The incision for the upper blepharoplasty is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This incision heals well. The lower blepharoplasty incision is made just under the eyelashes (subciliary) or inside the eye (transconjunctival).
Are there scars as a result?
The skin in the eyelids is the thinnest skin in the body. The incisions, when placed well, will heal well and be imperceptible.
Is it a painful procedure?
The blepharoplasty procedure is not painful. Patients typically complain of a burning sensation in the eyelids one hour after the procedure. The discomfort will generally last about 1 hour.
CAN I RESUME SEXUAL ACTIVITY?
You can resume your sexual activities as tolerated.
Bruising after blepharoplasty?
Some bruising is normal following any surgical procedure. Once again, ice is strongly recommended to reduce bruising. If you have excessive or very dark bruising, you should contact our office or your physician if outside of normal business hours.
When can I exercise?
You can increase your activity as tolerated but no heavy lifting or running for at least two weeks after surgery. Golden Rule: if it hurts, don’t do it. Allow your body time to heal.
Can I Use Ice?
Ice is STRONGLY recommended and is used to reduce swelling, bruising and pain. You can use frozen peas or crushed ice in a Ziploc bag. Apply ice pack to affected surgical area for 20 minutes then remove for 20 minutes…repeat. This should be done during the first 24-48 hours following surgery.*Be sure to place a rag/towel on skin then place the ice; do not place ice directly on your skin. *If the ice feels too uncomfortable, don’t use it as often.
Get rid of dark circles?
The most common reasons for dark circles under or around the eyes is thinning skin with age. The best alternative is for a Cosmetic Surgeon evaluation and to consider either serial or repeat chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing or microneedling to thicken skin over time.
Fat and loose skin around the eyes usually appears with age, but some young people are genetically prone to it, so there really is no set age when blepharoplasty is performed.
