What is a neck lift?

As people age, abundant skin and fat can develop in the neck area, which can produce a sagging, unappealing look that can be corrected by a neck lift. A neck lift (platysmaplasty or cervicoplasty) effectively removes this extraneous skin and fat to create a slimmer neck that will produce a sleeker look and a more distinctive profile. The cosmetic surgeons of Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates in Oklahoma City, Dr. Erik Nuveen and Dr. Courtney Caplin, use the neck lift as a rejuvenation treatment to help patients reverse the signs of aging. Neck lift surgery is a great option for those looking to avoid more extensive surgery while gaining all of the youth-restoring benefits. It elevates and improves the lower face jowls and defines the neck. It does not affect the cheeks or upper face. Dr. Nuveen and Dr. Caplin commonly use fat transfer to help augment and fill certain areas that the neck lift may not address. What can I expect during a neck lift procedure?

For neck lift surgery, IV sedation or general anesthesia is used. An incision is placed just in front or behind your ears, while another one may be placed underneath your chin. If pockets of fat exist, liposuction of the neck would first be performed. Following that, any sagging or hanging skin will be trimmed away, and the remaining skin will be pulled tight. This method of skin tightening is performed until the desired shape and contour have been achieved. The average case takes 60 minutes to perform and is an outpatient procedure, meaning you go home afterward with a head wrap for overnight.

There is minimal scarring with this procedure. Since the incision is placed under the chin and near the ears, the scarring is usually hidden. A skilled facial surgeon will take great effort to minimize scarring as much as possible. Also, other nonsurgical options can help the skin's surface, such as laser treatment or a peel, to create a younger-looking and glowing appearance.

What can I expect after a neck lift treatment?

After a neck lift treatment, there will most likely be some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, but these effects will fade within a week or two. You should rest and try to avoid exercise or strenuous activity for 2 – 3 weeks to assist in the recovery. While recovering, button tops or loose-fitting clothing is ideal. You should notice visible aesthetic differences almost immediately. In fact, it has been noted that neck lift surgery can make one of the most significant enhancements to a person's profile, shaving years off their appearance.

Your 24-hour follow-up appointment will be booked for you at the time of surgery. All following appointments are made through our nursing staff. We typically like to see patients at 24 hours, two weeks, one month, three months, and six months following surgery. You can increase your activity as tolerated but no heavy lifting or running for at least two weeks after surgery. Golden rule: if it hurts, don’t do it. Allow your body time to heal. Pain medication can cause constipation. We suggest purchasing an over-the-counter stool softener to assist in regularity (Colace or Dulcolax). Take one with each meal until you are finished taking narcotic pain medications. If this is not productive in 24 hours, take one-quarter of a bottle of Magnesium Citrate.

How much does a neck lift treatment cost?

For neck lift procedures, the cost will begin at $5,125. Since this is a cosmetic procedure, a neck lift procedure is not covered by insurance.

**Fees that are posted are subject to change. No doctor/patient relationship is established until exam. Consent in perpetuity until canceled in writing.

Neck Lift FAQ

What are some alternatives to a surgical neck lift?
Surgery is the only way to remove loose skin, especially if it is loose enough to hang and droop. Therefore, a neck lift is usually the only solution when it comes to redefining an individual’s neck to create a strong contour. While there are some very good skin tightening laser treatments on the market today, surgery is still the best option.

At what age should I receive a neck lift?
This depends on the situation and the amount of loose and sagging skin that is present. Some weight loss patients are young and may require a neck lift at a young age (for example, those between 20 –30). For older patients who are combating loose skin due to aging, the most common age is between 50 – 70.

Can I receive additional procedures along with a neck lift?
During the initial consultation, it may be brought up that in addition to a neck lift, the patient may also benefit from another procedure, such as a facelift or a chin implant. It is common for these additional procedures to be combined to achieve the patient’s desired contours and aesthetic goals.

Are there any limitations to a neck lift procedure?
The neck lift procedure has very limited access and areas of the neck that it treats. Any issues with sagging of the cheeks or loss of fullness of other areas of the face will require consideration of a SmartLift or full facelift. Unfortunately, a neck lift cannot stop the aging process. A neck lift does not change the quality or texture of the skin. A neck lift can, however, give the patient a more freshened and rested appearance.

What risks are associated with a neck lift?
It is rare to have complications after a neck lift performed by Dr. Nuveen or Dr. Caplin. However, this is a surgical procedure, and things can occur. Some of the potential complications associated with a neck lift procedure are bleeding, scarring, infection, nerve injury, and poor healing. Dr. Nuveen and Dr. Caplin will discuss these with you in a consultation.

Are the results of a neck lift permanent?
The results of a neck lift are long-lasting. However, the aging process will not stop after a neck lift. That said, you will look younger after your neck lift than if you had never had one. It is difficult to say how long the neck lift will last since everyone ages differently. The average re-operation is at ten years.
