What causes the butt to sag?

Whether you’re dealing with excess skin or a lack of definition in your buttocks, our team is here to help you create a refreshed backside with a butt lift. OKC’s Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates often see the following reasons behind a sagging butt.

Aging Skin

If you’ve noticed a loss of butt shape or tone over the years, a decrease in collagen production could be to blame.

Collagen is the protein that provides structure, support, and strength throughout the body. Making up 30% of the body’s total protein, collagen is the primary building block of your skin, muscles, and other connective tissues.

As we age, our bodies produce less collagen, and existing collagen breaks down at a faster rate. This decline is most common in women and individuals who are older than 60.

A decrease in collagen production can create wrinkled, sagging skin throughout the body, especially in the butt region.

Lack of Muscle Tone

Another side effect of aging is the gradual loss of muscle mass and strength, which can also affect the shape of your buttocks. This condition is called sarcopenia, a type of muscle atrophy.

As we age, we experience changes in our testosterone and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) hormone levels, both of which can leave your muscle fibers vulnerable to deterioration. Sarcopenia is also thought to be caused by a lack of physical activity and a poor diet.

Many adults developing sarcopenia note a loss of stamina, difficulty performing daily activities, and changes in muscle tone in areas like the butt.

Weight Loss

Major weight loss is an incredible accomplishment, but when your skin doesn’t shrink back into place, it can change the shape and definition of your bum.

During weight gain, your skin expands to make room for increased growth. Once the skin has been significantly stretched for a long period of time, collagen and elastin fibers can become damaged.

After significant weight loss, you may be left with excess skin. This can create a lack of definition throughout the body, particularly in the butt area.

Butt Lift at CSA

If unwanted fat or loose skin around your bottom are damaging your self-esteem, you have options! Our expert surgeons believe your best surgical option is a butt lift.

OKC’s Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates team has all the information you need before determining if a butt lift is right for you. Here are some more details to inform your decision:

What is a butt lift?

A butt lift is a cosmetic procedure that rearranges fat and removes sagging skin from your buttocks area. Also known as a lower back lift, this procedure improves the shape and surface of your backside by raising the gluteal muscles and tissue.

Butt lifts are often performed in combination with other procedures, including a tummy tuck or lower body lift.

Best Candidates for a Butt Lift

Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates recommends a butt lift for patients who are in good health and close to or at their ideal weight.

This procedure is particularly beneficial for patients who have lots of excess fat in the love handle region and loose, sagging skin around their buttocks. We recommend a butt lift for patients who have noticed their backside has lost its shape over the years, especially because of significant weight loss.

Does a butt lift increase the size of my butt?

It’s important to note that a traditional butt lift does not add volume to your butt. A butt lift’s main purpose is to give your butt a smoother, more toned appearance, not to make it larger.

If you are looking to increase the volume of your buttocks, we recommend a Brazilian butt lift, an auto-rotation of fat, or a butt augmentation using implants.

Brazilian Butt Lift

A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a cosmetic procedure that increases the size and shape of your butt by removing fat from other areas of the body. During this procedure, fat deposits in other parts of the body will be removed using liposuction and inserted into the areas around your butt.

This procedure creates a smoother body contour and will give your backside more shape.

Auto-Rotation of Fat

An autorotation of fat adds volume to the buttocks by rotating the fat from the love handle region or lower back down into the buttocks. Unlike fat transfer, the fat in this cosmetic procedure remains attached, giving profound projection.

Butt Augmentation

A butt augmentation adds volume to your backside through the use of implants. These silicone implants are placed into or below your gluteal muscle for a rounder, shapelier look. This procedure is best for patients with a flat or square-shaped backside.

It is also important to note that neither a BBL nor butt augmentation using implants can address excess sagging skin around the butt area. We recommend setting up a consultation with one of our expert surgeons to determine if you are best suited for a BBL, butt implants, or a butt lift.

The Butt Lift Process

Here’s what you can expect when you choose the team at Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates for your butt lift procedure:

The Initial Consultation

Your experience with a butt lift in OKC will begin with a comprehensive consultation with one of our expert surgeons.

At your initial consultation, your surgeon will provide an in-depth explanation of the butt lift procedure. They will also conduct an examination of the buttocks, skin, and lower body to determine if you would be a good candidate for a butt lift.

During this time, you’ll be asked to describe your expectations and what results you’re looking to get out of your procedure. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and share concerns regarding the surgery process.

Additionally, your surgeon will ask questions about your medical history, previous procedures, and any medications you’re currently taking. This helps to ensure that no major unforeseen complications arise during your procedure.

Once you decide on a butt lift in OKC to create a smoother bum, your surgeon will start developing your unique procedure plan.

The Full Procedure

A butt lift is an outpatient procedure, which means you’ll have the opportunity to return home once the surgery is complete. You will be under general anesthesia for the duration of the surgery, so you won’t be awake throughout the process.

Once your procedure begins, your provider will insert a catheter. Your legs will also be placed in sequential compression boots, which prevent blood clotting throughout your procedure.

Your surgeon will then make an incision along the lower back from hip to hip. They may also make an incision under your butt cheeks as well. These incisions will allow your surgeon to lift the buttocks and remove excess skin and fat.

Once the skin has been repositioned, your surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and dressings. They may also insert surgical tubes under your skin to drain excess blood and fluid if necessary.

Your butt lift in OKC will generally take anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

Essential Recovery

Immediately after your procedure, we will bring you to a recovery area to be monitored as the anesthesia wears off. This is also to ensure that no post-operative complications arise.

You will need to arrange a ride home from the hospital, as you will not be able to operate a vehicle safely after surgery. We also recommend having someone stay with you the first day after surgery to assist you as needed.

Following your procedure, you can typically expect 2 to 4 days of downtime and 1 to 2 weeks of recovery time.

We encourage you to be patient with your body throughout the recovery period. Every person recovers differently and at a unique pace, so do not attempt to rush the process. Butt lift surgery can be extensive and often requires a long recovery. It’s of utmost importance that you follow the recovery care guide given to you by your surgeon and attend all follow-up appointments.

After your procedure, you may experience moderate pain, swelling, and bruising. To aid in the recovery process, we recommend that you take pain medication and wear your compression garment as instructed.

You will be asked to take it easy and avoid strenuous activity throughout your recovery. If we insert surgical drains, we can remove these at a post-operative follow-up appointment. Be sure to follow other recovery instructions to keep your incisions clean and to help your body heal.

You will typically see your butt lift results immediately after surgery, but it may take 3 to 6 additional months to see the full effects.
