Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery is a procedure that enlarges the breasts to result in a fuller appearance. Generally speaking, breast augmentation is considered one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries, providing women who desire larger breasts the ability to change their look. Using implants or fat from the patient's body, this enhancement surgery improves breast shape and size and results in a desirable, natural, and youthful outcome. Cosmetic surgeons Dr. Erik Nuveen and Dr. Courtney Caplin are experienced in breast augmentation and perform many of these customized surgeries every year. During your consultation at Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates in Oklahoma City, OK, one of our talented surgeons will assess your aesthetic goals and help you understand all of the options available before creating a highly customized treatment plan to help you achieve your goal appearance.

Saline vs Silicone Implants

During your consultation at Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates, one of our surgeons will help you select the implant most appropriate for you based on your body size, shape, and aesthetic goals. Breast implants are made in varying shapes, sizes, profiles, and textures — each of which is considered carefully in order to achieve the specific look you wish to attain. The most commonly chosen breast implants are silicone or saline, both widely popular and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). An important thing to note is that candidates considering saline breast implants must be at least 18 years old while patients must be at least 22 years of age in order to undergo surgery with silicone. Two other types of augmentations include a form-stable implant known as a gummy bear implant and an autologous approach through fat grafting. In addition to the type of implant used, there are other notable factors to decide.

Size

Implant size is distinguished based on the number of CCs of silicone or saline to be used. To pick the right amount, our surgeons will measure how much original tissue exists and assess the size you hope to achieve. During surgery, it is common for Drs. Nuveen or Caplin to temporarily switch out various implants to get an idea on a better fit.

Implant Placement

Incision type, as well as implant placement,  are items that are discussed prior to your surgery. During the procedure, an incision is created and then the implant will be slipped into place. There are a couple of methods that may be used for implant placement. These include either submuscular placement (under the pec muscle) or submammary/subglandular placement (over the pec muscle). Where our surgeons will place the implants will be based on numerous factors, including the type and degree of implant enlargement. Regardless of the type of incision created, scarring is generally minimal as our surgeons are highly skilled in discreet incision placement.

During/After Breast Aug

Your breast augmentation will be performed as an outpatient surgery using general anesthesia. After creating the incision(s), the appropriate implant will be inserted through (and deposited into) a surgically created pocket before being placed into its proper position. Following the placement of the implant, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical adhesives. All patients will be taken into a recovery area and carefully monitored and screened before being released. You will be sent home wearing a medical sports bra to assist with swelling. Within a few days, the swelling will start to dissipate, and your breasts will begin to feel normal as they adjust to their new position. While individual results vary, most patients can resume normal activities within several days; however, exercise should be avoided for at least 6 – 8 weeks. Breast enhancement surgery produces beautiful outcomes that look and feel normal. In most cases, this treatment can be life-changing for many individuals, allowing them the chance to feel more confident.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

How much does breast augmentation cost?
The cost of your surgery could vary, depending on your choices and whether you are combining additional procedures. When your treatment plan is created, a member of our team will go over estimated costs, as well as financing options. To make sure you are happy with your results and they last a long time, it is better to focus on the quality provided by a qualified surgeon versus the price.

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include implants, a lift, or both. Breast lift surgery removes loose skin and raises the breasts while implants enhance the shape and size. At your consultation with one of our surgeons, we will listen to your concerns and goals before discussing your treatment options. An augmentation and/or breast lift are usually included in a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after breastfeeding and pregnancy.

Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you might want to breastfeed after augmentation surgery, let Dr. Nuveen or Dr. Caplin know during your consultation. It's usually possible to breastfeed after augmentation surgery with the right placement and technique. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can affect your results, which is why it is better to wait until your family is complete to get breast surgery.

Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you would like to remove or replace your implants at a later date. Or perhaps it is time for old implants to be removed and replaced. Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates offers breast revision surgery. During revision surgery, your old implants will be either replaced with different implants or removed. If you want to have your implants removed, you might need to have a breast lift to address stretched skin.

Do implants cause breast cancer?
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is investigating a link between implants and ALCL (anaplastic large cell lymphoma). This isn't breast cancer, but it is a cancer of the immune system. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), implant-related ALCL is very rare and when caught early, it is highly treatable. Our team encourages all patients with implants to get frequent screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Cosmetic Surgery Affiliates if you notice anything of concern, such as swelling after healing is complete.
